Three quarters of Quebec businesses make language errors in public signage: OQLF
Errors include typos, spelling or grammar mistakes, capitalization errors, syntax errors, or anglicisms.
QUEBEC — A study published by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) Tuesday shows that 74 per cent of Quebec businesses don’t respect French language standards in their public signage.
The exhaustive survey of 12,487 written “messages” in signage — company names and slogans, telephone numbers, opening hours, ads, notices, menus, etc. — is based on data collected in 2021 at 2,161 businesses in the regions of Montreal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke and Gatineau.
The OQLF found that 26 per cent of companies did not have any errors, while 74 per cent did. Companies more likely to have errors in signage included dépanneurs, salons, restaurants, grocery stores and manufacturers. Clothing stores and health centres were the least likely, with more than a third of those types showing no errors.
Errors include typos, spelling or grammar mistakes, capitalization errors, syntax errors, or anglicisms. Incorrect use of words derived from English amounted for about 10 per cent of errors, it said.
The OQLF noted that in almost half of the cases, the errors could be considered difficult to detect without advanced knowledge of written French.
Only one per cent of errors could really diminish the clarity of the message, it said.
The study noted that the statistics could have been swayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with nine per cent of messages — and 17 per cent of errors — relating to public health measures.
“Many of these messages with a limited lifespan (often printed with a simple office printer or even handwritten) could have been created without going through the usual process that compania.
